Size to your peak demand, not your average
Air demand (CFM at your required PSI) should be calculated from the sum of your simultaneous peak air-tool and process demand, with margin — sizing to average use leaves you short during peak periods, which shows up as tools running underpowered exactly when you need them most. Undersizing is the most common compressor mistake.
Rotary screw vs reciprocating
Rotary screw compressors handle continuous, high-duty-cycle industrial use efficiently and quietly; reciprocating compressors are typically lower cost upfront and suit intermittent, lower-duty applications well. Running a reciprocating compressor at near-continuous duty cycle leads to accelerated wear and more frequent maintenance than the equivalent rotary screw unit.
Air quality requirements affect more than the compressor itself
If your application needs oil-free air (food processing, electronics, pharmaceuticals, painting) confirm the compressor type matches — oil-injected rotary screw compressors are not appropriate for oil-free requirements regardless of downstream filtration. Get air quality class requirements clear before selecting compressor type, not after.
